When I first started in the solar industry, I thought inverters were just “that box that does the converting.” But after years of helping customers choose—and sometimes fix—their systems, I’ve learned that picking the right inverter is like choosing a reliable travel partner. It’s not about the flashiest specs. It’s about what works for your roof, your budget, and your daily routine.
Here’s the no-nonsense way to look at it.
1. Start with your actual electricity bill, not the catalogue.
Before you open any datasheet, open your monthly utility statement. Look at your peak consumption hours. Do you run the washing machine at noon? Are you home all day, or is the house empty until 6 PM?
This decides your inverter type:
- String inverter – One central unit. Simple, affordable, and easy to maintain. Works best if your roof gets consistent sun throughout the day (no chimneys or trees casting moving shadows).
- Microinverters – One per panel. Costs more upfront, but each panel works independently. If one gets shaded or dirty, the rest keep producing. Great for complex roofs or if you have neighbours’ trees.
Real-life check: A customer once bought a high-end string inverter because it had the best efficiency number. But his roof had three dormers. By 2 PM, half his panels were in shade, and his output dropped 40%. He would have been better off with microinverters, even with a lower peak efficiency.
2. Efficiency: Don’t chase the 0.5%
Every brand shouts “98.5% efficiency!” But honestly, the difference between 97.5% and 98.5% on a 5kW system is about 50 kWh per year—roughly the cost of two cups of coffee per month.
What matters more is MPPT range (Maximum Power Point Tracking). This is the voltage window where the inverter actually works hard. If your panel string voltage falls outside that range on hot summer afternoons, your “efficient” inverter will underperform. Check the operating voltage range, not just the peak number.
3. Noise and size – where are you putting it?
This is the part most salespeople skip.
If your inverter goes in the garage or a utility room, ignore this. But if it’s on a wall next to your living room or bedroom, fan noise becomes a real issue. Some high-power models sound like a gaming PC under full load. Others are passively cooled (heavier, bulkier, but silent).
Also measure the physical space. I’ve seen people buy a 10kW unit only to realise it doesn’t fit between the gas meter and the window. Get the mounting template PDF before you order.
4. The “rainy day” features you’ll actually use
Skip the touchscreen gimmicks—most of you will monitor via your phone anyway. Look for these practical ones instead:
- Smooth grid reconnection – After a power outage, some inverters wait 5 minutes to reconnect; others do it in 30 seconds. That matters if you have frequent short dips.
- Derating curve – This tells you how much power the inverter reduces when the temperature hits 45°C (common in summer). A good inverter derates gradually; a cheap one drops like a stone.
- Replacement parts availability – Ask the supplier: “Can I get a new fan or control board in 3 years?” If they hesitate, walk away.
5. Warranties are promises, but service is reality
A 10-year warranty is standard. A 12-year one is nice. But I’ll take a 10-year warranty from a local distributor who answers my WhatsApp in 2 hours over a 15-year warranty from a brand that only replies via email once a week.
Check if they have service centres in your region. Not just “authorised partners”—actual stock of spare units. Because when your inverter fails on a Friday afternoon, waiting two weeks for a replacement is not an option.
My final two cents
Forget the marketing noise. Sit down with these three questions:
- Where does my sun hit, and when?
- Where does the box physically go?
- Who picks up the phone when something goes wrong?
The right inverter isn’t the most expensive one. It’s the one that fits your roof, your routine, and your peace of mind. Everything else is just numbers on a sheet.
